I think the oldest attribution I found was a reporter recounting that Ansel Adams said it to the author Jack London. London, according to that version, asked Adams what make of camera he used. He (London) reportedly said something along the lines of, "I love your photos. You must have a great camera. Please tell me what kind it is so I can make photos like yours!" Adams allegedly replied, "Telling a photographer 'You take wonderful pictures; you must have a great camera' is like telling an author, 'You write terrific novels; you must have a great typewriter.'
