I hate what this stay at home has done to my hobbies! I like to fish. I like all aspects of the sport. Rods, reels, lures, hooks, line and especially the different types of bait. Before this thing hit us, I had apprenticed myself to an old master fisherman who had taken me on and he was showing me all the intricacies. He took me under his wing and I was advancing at a nice pace. I started out as an apprentice of course, but there is so much to learn. I started with rods. The differences between fiberglass and bamboo; Section rods versus one piece; Flexibility versus strength; Store bought versus home made. I studied it all. Soon my rods were a thing of beauty and a couple even won some prizes and sold for top dollar. I became a master rod maker. Then we got into the different reels. Shimano versus Shakespeare; Penn versus Zebco. I studied it all. Soon I was giving classes and lectures on my own and I became a master reel man. The lures came next. Spinners versus walkers; poppers versus spoons; dry fly versus wet fly. Nothing was left out. Apprentice then journeyman and then I became a master lure man. I went the entire route. Again I was asked to show others, and I was happy to do it. Then last January we started getting into different live bait. Minnows versus night crawlers; grubs versus crawdads; lugworm versus dobsons – so much to learn! But I was progressing well and had attained my journeyman status. Then the dreaded covid hit, and I had to isolate. Had to stay at home with only books and training films. No sitting at the knee of the old master fisherman. I went into a slump. I thought that I would never be able to advance. But I was wrong. This isolation has shown me a new path and last night I became a Master! Yep, all by myself, with no outside help, I became a master baiter. The feeling is wonderfull.
