An elderly gentleman is dying, and he calls to his deathbed his doctor, his priest, and his lawyer. "You have been my three closest friends in the world" he says to them. "Now, here at the end of my life, I have one last favor to ask of you. My dying wish is that I should take some of my fortune with me when I go." He hands them each an envelope. "Inside each of these envelopes is 500-thousand dollars, cash. When you come up to pay your last respects, please slip your envelope underneath my body so I can be buried with it all." The next day the gentleman dies. At the funeral the three friends go up to the casket, and each surreptitiously slips their envelope under the old man's body. After the proceedings the three meet at a local restaurant for lunch. 20 minutes into their meal the priest quietly says, "I have confession to make. Before I put my envelope under his body, I took a hundred thousand dollars out. You know our parish operates that orphanage, and we are desperately short of supplies. That money will buy beds, food, clothing, and allow us to make much needed repairs. I'm sure our friend would not have minded." Then the doctor spoke up. "Ok, I have to admit I took two hundred thousand out of my envelope. You know we started that new cancer wing, but our costs are more than anticipated. This money will all us to buy new diagnostic equipment that will no doubt save numerous lives. Knowing our friend, I'm sure he would have approved." The lawyer looked at both of them with a frown. "I am ashamed of both of you" he said. "That man was our friend, and I don't care what good intentions you have for the money, we gave him our word. I want you to know that the envelope I slipped under his body this morning contained my personal check for the full amount."
