Some are making this much more complicated than need be. When you shoot WA & UWA, & the subject is the entire composition (which is most of the time) use the Hyperfocal Distance. In these conditions, once you've selected your aperture, the Hyperfocal Distance ensures you'll have the greatest amount of DOF for that circumstance--in other words, the entire composition is maximized for sharpness.
Now, if you are shooting WA or UWA, & want to use subject isolation to bring attention to a particular subject, then , DA, obviously you would not use the Hyperfocal Distance! But, trying to highlight a subject through subject isolation in WA or UWA shooting is not a common thing--this is best done to longer focal lengths if possible. jt
