Disturbing news

:concern: Would be photographer goes to eye doctor. Just routine annual exam. But doctor says that the fellow has the beginning of cataracts on both eyes. Surgery is required.

Can hardly imagine news that would make a photographer more anxious than possible eye problems. Other than a supplier being out of the new lens you wanted.

Of course his friends all rave about the blessings of modern medicine but he knows personally of some who have had serious problems with such surgery. What to do, what to do?

Well first off, go take more pictures. Edit same. Print the good ones and just soldier on. We constantly, all of us, have to add to the body of our work every single day. It is what we do. It is why we meet here sometimes daily to exchange ideas and suggestions. Each to improve our work in every way we can.

A Persian fellow explained it best 1000 years ago. "The moving finqer writes, and then moves on.. and neither all your piety or wit shall cancel half a line, or all your tears wash out a word of it."

I've had eye surgery on both eyes - very successful.

Couple of my friends have had cataract surgery - both very successful.

Frankly, photographer or not, the thought of losing ones eyesight is a very daunting propect - photography is just one aspect of my life, including art, food, various computer functions, family, classic cars, etc., all without exception eyesight features greatly into the picture of each and every area.

Best wishes to your friend. As you say, take the camera out and use the hell out of it, and most of all I hope he has good family support.

Me too, cataracts removed from both eyes, very successful. I would not call it minor or trivial, certainly the doctor needs to pay close attention, but for the patient, the surgery was minor and trivial. It actually seems a good thing that it gets bad enough for surgery, because then they can fix it. Look forward to it, it turns out to be a good thing.

And they told me I also had glaucoma in both eyes. But luckily detected early, I don't have any peripheral loss, and I am unaware of any problem. I do have have to use prescription eye drops every evening now, and it stays no worse than before. But otherwise, even this is no big deal either. Modern medicine is good.

My mother after having her cataracts done said well that saved me some money,i thought i needed a new carpet but that one is still bright and new looking,bless her.
