Deleted images still appear in Lightroom

I have recently acquired Lightroom 5 and still finding my way around it. I have named a batch of RAW images in My Pictures and deleted many as inferior or just because I may have taken two or three if someone got in the way. However, when I import them to Lightroom it "imports" the deleted images and shows an exclamation mark next to them and tells me it cannot find them! Is there any way to stop it "importing" the deleted files in the first place to save confusion?

Once you import into Lightroom you're going to want to do all of your file management for those images in Lightroom. Previews are saved in the LR catalog, so if you delete or move the images using other means then they'll still appear in LR with an '!' in the corner stating that the corresponding file is not available. A nice thing about that is, if you use Smart Previews, you'll still be able to produce fairly good sized, shareable JPG's from the preview if the deletion was accidental.

That said, I'm a little perplexed by your issue, particularly what you mean by I have named a batch of RAW images in My Pictures. It sounds like you're importing first to your computer and then to Lightroom from there. If that's the case, I highly recommend using the LR Import facility to pull them in straight from the camera to avoid stuff like this. I don't know why deleted images are still showing up, but one guess would be that they're not actually deleted but in the Trash and LR is finding them for some reason?

Yes it sounds like your importing from your desktop. Like Backdoorhippie has stated, it's so much better to import directly into lightroom. Also if deleting images from lightroom. You have two options when deleting. You can delete the file from the catalog or delete it from the disk. Deleting from the catalog simply removes it from the lightroom catalog but keeps it in your hard drive. Deleting it from the disk and you'll never see it again.

OK thanks yes. I AM importing the images from memory card to Pictures on the computer as that is what I am used to I guess. I then identify and name the images in alphabetical order (which itself takes some time as they are travel/landmark images) within the folders and the folders automatically file in alphabetical order. Once they are named and I delete the dodgy or duplicated ones I then import the ones I want to save to Lightroom. I guess you are right in that the deleted images are actually still on the comp in the trash can so Lightroom still finds them but I wonder why it would look there when I have stipulated the folder I want import? I have tried to name images in Lightroom and it seems such a long and complicated chore and that is why I carry out the task on the comp 1st. And yes I deleted the images in Lightroom just from the catalog as they were already deleted from the folder on the comp. Thanks to BackdoorHippie and FastGlass and any further info would be appreciated.
