Daily Gear

Don't know if this is in the right section...

How many of you Nikonites keep gear (bodies, lenses, etc) with you on a daily basis? I see so many people posting photos daily, it makes me wonder if I should have my camera everywhere I go?\

Feel free to call me out on being a total idiot for posting this too....

If you have it with you then its there if needed ;) but most of the time if I am out at work for a week I tend to leave it at home, but may just start carrying it and a single lens. But if I go for a drive then its in my car, unless I am going to a pub or club then I leave it at home.

I don't leave home without it unless the risks of having it with me far outweigh the risks of not (i.e. I'm not leaving it in the car at a concert venue that I know I can't bring it inside, even if the photos I can take on the way there/back might be tremendous).

After taking that first step where you learn to take it with you, the next big step is to learn to stop the car, back up or turn around, and go take that picture you just missed and be a little late to where you're going.

I typically have my camera with me but that's about it. I certainly don't keep my full bag on me at all times; that wouldn't even be practical for me. There's been several instances where I stumbled on a shot and if you don't have a camera, obviously, you miss the opportunity. Shooting, even a little, on a regular basis keeps me thinking "compositionally" if nothing else.

HA! Sooo true!!

I usually have mine with me as well, unless there is a chance that I have to leave it in the truck for an extended period then I leave it at home.

I'd *LOVE* to carry it with me everywhere, but I've found that, at times, it creates a little tardiness... ;)

I pull off my 365 project (or I have so far) by planning ahead and knowing what I want to try. If I can do that at night, after work, my camera just might stay at home for the day. It really all depends on the day, though. If I know I'll get my full lunch break, the camera comes along no matter what shooting I have planned for later. If I know it's going to be busy, I don't even tempt myself.

Non-work days? Yes, it's with me unless the risk is just too high. And, like BDH said... I've learned to pull over, turn around, find a route to get to the shot I just spotted!

I typically have 1 body with lens and a spare lense... "most" of the time..

I also will not leave it in the truck in some areas and/or extended time...

I would say, if you can afford it, get a second camera. A good compact is far easier to bring with you. Since you are most likely going to post the photos online, the IQ of a compact is going to be more than enough. One member here recently bought a little Nikon 1 for a really good price. Perhaps look for one with the 10-30. I have a Fuji X-10 and it fits in my cargo pants just fine or in my coat pocket. I have owned a D7100 and it's something I would not want to haul around everywhere I go.

Not for nothing, but shots on 4 of the 8 days so far in my 365 thread are of this type.

I would love to be at this point...but there are a few obstacles.

1. carrying my D7100 everywhere...I can see this being a bit of a hinderance.
2. i don't think i have the eye, yet, to notice something, and think "oooh if i had my camera, that would make a great photo"...BUT I WANT TO BE THERE, YESTERDAY LOL!

But then again, I have my cellphone (terrible camera option but better than nothing) with me at all times, but maybe carrying a small point-and-shoot for starters????

Obstacles are nothing but excuses - valid or otherwise. But I get what you're saying. The thing is it's not the eye you have to train, it's the brain. Believe me, I don't see "shots" during the drive, I see opportunities for shots. Seeing the opportunities comes from 2 things, looking at lots of photos and realizing what it is I'd like to shoot if I had the opportunity, and making looking for photos in every day life a priority. Life is so distracting that we have learned to look past the mundane and ordinary to get to where we're going, but if you look at a lot of great photos you notice that many of them are comprised of things that are around us every day. You have to train your brain to stop looking past them and to start realizing that there are hidden gems everywhere. A year ago, instead of driving into town to pick up the Sunday Paper, I decided to walk. It's about a mile each way, and while I can always use the exercise, it was the ability to slow down and look around that I wanted. On a street that I'd driven literally thousands of times I started to find things I never noticed, from a cool array of mailboxes to several abandoned buildings and warehouses. I started exploring side streets and alleys (this is a VERY rural area too) finding interesting gardens and old garages. I took walks down train tracks. I explored for the first time in decades. That trained me to start looking in the car, but there's a mentality about being behind the wheel and "getting somewhere" that still keeps us from stopping when we see something, and that's the next step.

Two summers ago I put the DSLR down and did 4 months of iPhoneography. It was my way of looking for pictures without having to carry gear, and it worked. Unfortunately, I treated it as a different tool, and fell into the Instagram filter, over-editing trap, but at least I was looking at the world with a photographer's eyes - or at least starting to. Sure, you don't have 24MP's, but you can make some brilliant photos with a camera phone, so if you don't feel like carrying your camera, then use that.

And btw, when I say I take my camera everywhere, that doesn't mean it leaves the car with me, but it's within reach when I need it. Some places, when appropriate, I'll throw it over my shoulder. But more times than not it's there just in case.

I always have a camera with me. It's either a:

Nikon body & grip w/lens/lenses/flash in some kind of bag
Nikon body & lens on strap
Canon S90 w/Franiec grip
iPhone

I never miss an opportunity to get the goods on somebody! Remember, blackmail is another revenue stream for a starving artist.

I don't have a ton of equipment, so I always keep it in my gear bag and bring it all when I decide to go out and shoot.
