So, it's been a tough week. A royal PITA and not just here. I'm falling asleep at my computer, so I decide to go put my head down for 20 minutes (a great perk of working at home). My head is on the pillow 5 minutes and the brain kicks in about this nonsense. And then all of a sudden... Sonovabich!!!! When I shot these I did RAW + JPEG, because I wanted to have a JPEG comparison as well. I turned off all the extra JPEG-related nonsense except High ISO NR!!! Why? Because I wanted to show what the camera is capable of for JPEG shooters. What I'd forgotten is that ViewNX2 thinks it's smarter than we are and will apply all JPEG profiling to the RAW file on conversion because it figures we wanted it in the first place (just imagine how far into recesses of my brain I had to dig for that considering I haven't used ViewNX since March 2011 - no wonder I needed to be near-sleep). Just tested it and sure enough, turn off the high ISO NR and both the RAW and JPEG files show all the noise in the world, as do the images created from the NEF files. Given that NR kicks in at ISO 800 and above, I suspect it was this function that caused the variations in textures and detail smoothing that people were seeing. Now that I know... and I can't sleep... (but I have so much work to do...)
