I have had this EXACT same issue. I am on my 2nd D750 body and am convinced this is a known issue that Nikon has yet to communicate publicly. I ONLY have this issue w/ my Nikon 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S D lens, my 80-200 f/2.8 works like a charm every time. Here is what I have noticed thus far. When the issue occurs i can hear a very faint ticking sound coming from the mount where the lens connects to the camera. I can usually just push in the lens release button w/out turning the lens to get the autofocus to work again. Occasionally I have to slightly disconnect and reconnect the lens for it to start working again. My 28-70 contacts are in excellent shape and I have cleaned them numerous times (almost OCD about them). This lens has worked flawlessly on a D40x, D90, D700, D800, D2x. The ONLY camera I have ever had an issue w/ is my D750. I am taking both the camera and the lens to Midwest Camera Repair tomorrow to have them take a look vs. send everything into Nikon & be without my equipment for 6 weeks and be charged likely for an unnecessary repair. I have been in contact w/ at least 3 other people dealing w/ this same issue w/ this same lens and camera combo. Hoping Nikon acknowledges this soon!!! I'll keep you posted on what i find out from MWCR tomorrow! -Jordan
