D7100 "Scene" options

I've only had my 7100 a few days and am having a serious problem: I continually, accidentally move off of the scene (like sports or close up) that I'm using, I assume, by sliding the main command dial. Is there no way to lock the camera on ONE scene option? For example, so that I do not start shooting close ups when I'm shooting fast action?

I never used Scene modes, but given how close the D7000/7100 and the D600/610 are I tried it on my D600 and it would seem that there's no way to prevent the thumb wheel from changing it, much like there's no way to prevent the thumb wheel from changing the shutter speed in shutter priority mode. It's a camera control and it does what it does. The difference being that there is no change in the viewfinder information when this happens in scene more as there would be in Shutter or Aperture priority at the bottom. The only clue I seemed to get was that the back display does light up when it happens, which in all but bright lights might be visible provided you don't use an eye cup.

It sounds like your problem is ergonomic if the thumb accidentally changes the commend wheel unknowingly. Perhaps adding a battery grip might reposition your hand so as not to move it? That's about all I have other than to practice being conscious abut not keeping your thumb on the wheel.
