D7100 and external flashes

I have a d7100 and a SB-700 flash and when I have it in remote mode, it seems I have to use the built in flash as well. Is there a way to just use the external flash only?

You have to go into the camera settings menu and set flash to commander mode to use it off camera. I am also not certain but I think it uses built in flash on lowest power as a flash trigger.

Did that but what I want to do while its off camera is to have the external flash go off without having the built in flash have to go off too

The commander is in the internal flash, and to work, it must flash commands to the remote. This happens before the shutter opens, so if you disable the internal flash (as mode "- -" to not contribute light to the picture), it has to flash commands, but it won't influence the picture lighting.

If you are instead concerned about the pictures of the subject blinking, just use FV Lock. Or the SG-3IR panel can help, but the remote still flashes TTL preflashes before shutter opens.

I've had very good success with setting camera on manual settings, and then using the Yongnuo RF603 N triggers. They work wonderfully, and are very affordable.

Yes, your on camera flash HAS to go off- it's how the camera communicates with the SB700 in remote mode. It's a weak pulsating flashing - like morse code and is not strong enough to contribute to lighting up the image but enough to communicate with the SB700.

Also, note the side of the SB700 with the little red window - that's the receiver and it must face the direction of the camera to work. Also, if you are using the setup in as fill-in flash in bright daylight, it may not fire as the bright sunlight may overwhelm the signaling flash of the onboard flash.
