D7100 18-105mm vs. 18-140mm HELP

Dude you should get the 35mm 1.8g($196) and 50mm 1.8g($220) to pair with your D7100 and 70mm-200mm. Both of these primes will be sharper and cover your low to mid range. The low light capability will be more useful then the kit lens..Just my 2 cents..
A pic with the 35mm..ON top 50mm on bottom..

Thanks ShootRaw. But let me ask...

If i opt for the D7100 body only, pickup a 35mm and 50mm primes, then I'm stuck carrying multiple lenses, and I have nothing in between 50 and 70mm, which means lugging around the 70-300 when I dont have to.

Toughts?

Its nice to have a lens like the 18-140mm kit lens when you just want to walkaround with one lens and not have to change lenses.

I, too, have the 18-105, and it lives on my D300. But...if I had a choice, I'd certainly get the 18-140 for the extra reach. As ShootRaw pointed out, it's always preferable to have fast glass, but there's the "problem" of carrying around extra lenses. You can always pick up the 35 and the 80 1.8's later on as you progress.

I think if I was so motivated I could drive myself nuttier than I already am trying to figure out the absolute best combination of "speed" (meaning max aperture), focal length and sharpness for every situation but, luckily, I'm not. Photography is *always* a bit of juggling routine but the 18-105mm is fast enough and flexible enough and sharp enough that moving away from this lens requires an argument: What do I need that this lens is not providing me?

Sharpness? Okay... My 85mm f/1.8G has that covered, so if that's the over-riding concern I switch to it... Focal length? Okay... My Tokina 11-16mm can go wider and 55-200mm can go longer... You get the idea and this same thing would hold true for the 18-140mm, probably just more so. But at some point in my opinion, and really my whole point here is that we, as photographers, at some point need stop asking, "What lens do I need to get the shot I want?" and *start* asking, "How do I get the shot I want with the lens I have?" One path leads to lens acquisition and little more, the other leads to better photography. And I say this as lover of the prime lens. LOVES me a good prime, make no mistake. But even so, the 18-105 or the 18-140mm, would be the lens I would probably grab if I could have but one. Probably... That's a decision I hope I would never have to *actually* make.

To me having a couple of lightweight primes is no biggie...If $ allowed the best decision would be the Nikkor 24mm_70mm 2.8 .....
