D7000 Or D5300

Hi,

I finally have enough money to buy a camera and I've been eyeing the D5300 which is $800(around what my budget is for the body). I was about to buy it until I saw the D7000 in an ad for $800 as well. From comparisons that I've done its seems to be New tech vs convenience. It seems like the 5300 has an small edge in most categories besides the convenience.

Im a beginner photographer and want to do mainly landscape, street photography and some filming projects. I dont plan on buying any replacement for which ever camera I buy for a while so I want it to be future proof(as future proof as any tech can be anyway).

Ive played with both of them at a store but still cant decide. Any input would be awesome.

Thanks in advance.

I suggest you go for D7000 if the price is the same with D5300. The main difference between D7000 and D5300 is D7000 has focussing motor inside the body while D5300 doesn't. D5300 has to depend on the motor in the lenses with AF-S. Those lenses without AF-S wont be able to auto focus if used with D5300. This is besides other factors in D7000 like weather seal, stronger body etc.But that's only my personal opinion. The choice is of course up to you :) Happy shopping.

Probably best to hold them in person at a store. Dial in some manual settings, change focus modes, metering modes, etc. Don't just give them a quick hold, dive in a bit.

The d7000 has a user interface that lends itself to quickly changing settings. Front and rear command wheels, a few more buttons, top LCD display so you can easily see what state the camera is in (especially handy out in the sun). It takes a little practice and you need to stay familiar with it. If you only pull the camera out a few times a year, the d5300 might be easier to navigate with the menus. It takes longer, but the menu lends itself to forgetting how to use the camera and finding what you need.

Swing out screen on the d5300 might be handy for video. Two memory card slots on the d7000. Plenty of comparisons on the web with more detail.

probably harder to do, but save a little longer and get the D7100, newer and better, you are going to have it for a while, better to buy the latest IMO

yes,, I just got rid of my 5100 as my ultra light weight,, I have a 7000 too, and between the two,, the 7000 just wins hands down, for toughness and the critical feature of being compatible with 50 years of Nikkor lens.. that alone swings it for me, a front and back control wheel for a more natural manual mode shooting. The 5300 will be an awesome camera, but for me, its features/build that wins..

oh,, and the fact that I had to have my 5100 shutter replaced!,, versus the toughness of my now 3 year old 7000, grins.
