You could sell the lens for parts, or display it on a body in your living room, lol. Possibly see if you can get another great deal on a 5300, I dunno.
I have a 5300 and had an issue with the auto focus after I had been taking many pictures! There was a few specs of dust on the exterior lens, and as soon as I cleaned it, no more issues! As far as the 5300, I really love it! I am far from an experienced photographer, it's my opinion. I just got a D610 a few days ago, so the 5300 will now be my backup. Knowing what I know now, I would keep them both, even if the lens is bad, as I bought mine for a good price and saw what they were going for as well! If I were in your shoes, without experiencing the camera like I have, I probably would return them, if it is a bad lens. You could sell the lens for parts, or display it on a body in your living room, lol. Possibly see if you can get another great deal on a 5300, I dunno. Something I thought of as well, I use spot focus/metering, and have had issues with that, not focusing. Try the other metering options, that may help.
