D5200 to iMovie

I've read that I must transcode from .264 to AIC. Correct? If so, what is the best way to do that? And does transcoding hurt the image?

I've done some minor videos in iMovie with several different cameras (including Nikon) and I've really never had to convert as you've mentioned. I did find some hits about the subject though so there must be something to it. What happens exactly when you try to edit your videos? The article I read was some time ago, there might be a chance that iMovie picked up more codec support.

If you need to convert from .mov to .mp4, you can use Handbrake. I'm assuming you must be using Windows if you are having any issues with .mov files. It is open source software and available for most operating systems including Windows, Mac OS X, and most variations of Linux. You can download it at handbrake.fr .

QuickTime .mov is Apples codec. iMovie is Apple editing software. No way should you need to transcode. My D7000 .mov files work pretty well everywhere without transcoding.
