I bought my wife a little, red 3100. She loves it. Nikon is obviously going after a largely untapped, female market that just wants a nice camera that takes great pics. I would venture to say that women buy more point-and-shoot cameras than men, in general. With the exclusion of photo hobbyist and pros, women seem to really enjoy taking pics more than the average guy. My wife will take a pic of almost anything. Some of these female point-and-shoot camera owners are probably willing to upgrade to a cute, little, red Corvette. Oops, I meant to type "DSLR." Most of these entry-level ladies are not interested in learning about aperture and shutter. They want to shoot in auto and still get a really nice shot. Of course, Nikon assumes that some of these ladies will become interested in learning more about photography and will eventually upgrade to a more sophisticated Nikon DSLR. It's a win-win for Nikon. This is why, no matter how low the cost for FX cameras get, the DX cameras will always be around. DX is here to stay. DX allows for upgrades from point-and-shoot to DSLR's.
