D5100 sd card ejection mechanism faulty

SD Card is not ejecting for my Nikon D5100. I have to use a pair of tweezers to eject it. When the card is in the camera works fine. My question is:
1. My warranty expired, how much would it cost to have it repaired by a professional?
2. I can always use the Usb cable to transfer the pictures, but I like to be able to eject the card, but i don't want to use a pair of tweezers everytime. Is there anything I can do myself to fix it?

Thanks.

So, you're saying in effect that when you push down on the SD card, it doesn't pop back up so you can take it out? Hmmmmm.....that's strange. Perhaps your camera shop can suggest a fix for that. I've never heard of that ever happening before.

Never heard of the problem either. I would take a look in the slot and see if there may be a piece of pocket lint or something blocking the spring or something like that.

When you put the card back in, does it spring lock?
By that I mean, when you push it in, does it go in, lock, and then spring up a little bit?

Could be a clue as to why you can't eject it.

Otherwise, just take it to a camera shop and let them have a look

These are all good questions. My SD Card locks and pops up like it should, but it requires more grip to extract it than I expected. The first time I tried to remove my SD Card, I too thought something might be wrong, but with a bit of extra effort it came out just fine. I'm used to it now and it all seems quite normal. I wanted to mention this; yours is probably fine. As the others suggested, a trip to the camera store would tell for sure.

Thank you so much for the quick responses. The card was jammed in the slot. I do have other cards and it was happening to the others as well. It seemed that the card was stuck on the "all the way down" position, meaning the spring was completed pressed. The only way out was to use the pair of tweezers. Now, here is the kicker. Today was such a nice day that I decided to take my girls to the zoo and take some pictures there. I don't know what happened, but tonight, after seeing everyone's reply to my post, I was getting ready to create a video of the issue, so as I was about to pressed the card down to show that it was completely pressed down, guess what?? to my surprise, the card popped out. I am not sure if there might be a small problem with the locking mechanism or the combination of the spring and the lock. But now it is working. I will be extra careful when handling the card from now on, and I will keep a close eye in case this issue comes back. But for now, I guess the camera might be ok. Thanks again everyone for your replies.

I've had this problem as well. Pushing down with a bit of extra force worked for me. It looks like 3 of the little plastic ridges that seperate the contact points on the memory card broke off.

How were you trying to take it out before - and I don't mean the tweezers?
Sounds to me like you were trying to pull it out and not pushing down on it to allow the spring to pop it up. So when you pushed down on it to show that it was stuck it worked as it is supposed to.
Forgive me if I am wrong and stating the obvious but sometimes the obvious isn' so obvious. :)

Before there wasn't a problem, so I could remove the card in the standard way.

When the standard way failed me I googled the issue to see if anyone else experienced this issue, which brought me to this thread.

I didn't fancy using the tweezers approach to pull it, so I tried a bit of brute force to push it in. This worked for me.

I still need to use the "brute-force-push" method, as I like to call it. Which makes me think there's something caught in the mechanism. So I still have a problem that I'm unsure how to resolve.

A visit to an in-store expert is in order.
