D5100 Hack Tutorial

Guys, I'm new here, so if this post is in the wrong place, help me find the right place for it! :D

There is a hack, developed by the guys from Nikon Hacker, that allows D5100, D3100 and D7000 users to enable some really cool extra features!
It works perfectly and increases the video capabilities of the camera tremendously!


The Patched firmware enables you to remove time based video restrictions, Liveview manual ISO and shutter speed control, clean HDMI & LCD Liveview output, to remove NEF compression, to disable Nikon "star eater" (Nikon D70 Versus Canon 10D), to use third party batteries and more.

I made a video tutorial for it, since I had a little hard time gathering all the necessary information to get it done.
It's fast and easy! Give it a try!

I don't own a 3rd party battery, so thanks for showing that it really works!

The thing that I most wanted to show was that the manual ISO and shutter liveview controls were now working too!
Video capabilities on the d5100 were very limited before the hack!

1) Liveview is the mode where the image being captured by the sensor is shown at the lcd on the back of the camera. Even if you swich to manual mode, on the mode dial, while in Liveview, you will not be able to see the effect of ISO and shutter speed changes on the image being captured. You´ll only be able to see the result of the adjusted exposure when you actually take the shot. When shooting video the situation gets worse! The original firmware only allows you to choose the desired aperture and adjusts automatically the rest for you. With the hacked firmware you are able to set a desired exposure and film using such exposure. The only way around this using the original firmware is to use brighter and darker parts of your scenario to adjust the auto exposure by pointing your camera at those areas and locking the exposure by using the AE-lock button. This is very frustrating though. If you like shooting video with your d5100, just hack it!


2) NEF is the file format Nikon uses for RAW image files. These RAW files are supposed to be a true reproduction of the image sensor's output. However, Nikon uses a compression algorithm to make the files smaller. It is not as destructive as Jpeg but still looses some detail. With the hack, the compression is disabled and you get a legit RAW file.

3)Nikon´s star eater is a little more complicated. When shooting pictures of the sky, nikon tends to black out some stars. This modification will prevent the camera from doing that! There is a very extensive discussion on this in the following link:

The Liveview hack is very tempting. I don't do very much video work and I tend to use the viewfinder when shooting so I'll probably leave mine as it is but thanks for the tutorial.

That 1080 @ 56fps for 600 looks tempting as well, but no no, no no no not risking this camera. I might try that on 5100 though.

I can tell you ahead of time that, though it will produce a 56Fps file, it is made up of duplicates of the max 30Fps file made up by the sensor.
The D5100's sensor is physically unable to produce more frames.
