d5100 GPS connector

Hello,

This may not be possible...I have recently started using a d5100, and love it. One thing I have noticed is that the GPS socket is in a slightly awkward location.

I was thinking of trying to make up a cable, using very thin ribbon cable, to run the three requried cores (power, data, ground) to a more useful location. The thin ribbon cable might allow the rubber cover to be closed. The connector itself seems to be non-standard - plugs I can buy online as a remote cord and desolder, but I can't find any sources for a socket...

Has anyone tried this, or know of a useful source for sockets/plugs?

Obviously technically I could just modify the camera itself, but I'd much much rather do this with proper plugs/sockets to preserve camera warranty!

Cheers,

Ben

I am not too sure about off the shelf part for the sockets etc although I would presume you could buy a spare part for a camera with the same socket. Cable is easy to source though it is worth checking if the impedance of the cable matters, if it does the wrong cable could give reflections that will mess up signals. Given the availability of the parts then it may be worth considering making it longer so it say sits a quarter way up the strap a bit more out of the way? Sorry can not be much more help I designed audio equipment so its mostly conjecture. Also make sure you have a decent soldering iron.
