Hello, I was recently in Bora Bora and was taking pictures during the sunset. I am curious as to why I was getting digital noise during the daytime? Is it the camera? The setting were - ISO 500, f/4.8 exposure 1/2500 - I attached the picture. Even when I took a picture a picture at ISO 200 I had the same problem. Is it the camera or am I just missing something???

What is your quality setting? Are you using Raw or Jpeg? If Jpeg, Fine-Large or Medium-small? This could be it, or, the picture is a little under-exposed.

If you could post your quality settings and exposure date, maybe we could find the culprit.

I don't think it's noise, it looks more like compression artifacts. JPEG quality is probably too low. If this is the original file, then the size is also very telling. A maximum quality JPEG from a D5100 should be 5-8MB, not 0.5MB.

I took the picture using Fine/large. I had to re-size the original file because it was too big to upload to this thread.

Judging by its dimensions you didn't resize it much, but you lowered the JPEG quality setting a lot, and it shows. This makes it hard to distinguish between the noise you complain about and the artifacts of heavy compression.

Could you instead crop a small, really noisy part of the original image and upload that in a lossless format, like 24-bit PNG?

Indeed, this amount of noise looks too much for an ISO 500 image. My guess is that the sensor was probably overheating a bit. Were you using the camera a lot in the previous hours? Was it a sunny day?
