(Trying hard not to lose it)

After speaking with "customer support", and performing yet another camera reset, the response is...

"I would recommend you sending the body in for service."

OK, will you be sending me a prepaid shipping invoice?

"No, sir. You would just send it in, you have to pay postage. I would also recommend you sending in the Nikon lens that is giving you the issue."

OK, what about a service order number?

"You won't get one until after we receive it and a tech provides you with an estimate."

Excuse me for sounding surprised, and more than a little annoyed, but this is a $2000 body that I've had for less than a month, and you're asking me to "just ship it" and a $1400 lens so you can just poke around with it to try and reproduce an issue I have told you is intermittent - and then you're saying you may be giving me an estimate on what it will cost to fix it?!

"Well, sir, we need to make sure that no water or sand have damaged the body, in which case any necessary repair would not be covered by warranty."

You are shitting me, right?

"No sir, this is what you would need to do if you want us to help you resolve your issue."

Help me resolve MY issue?!?!

I seriously need to take a deep breath, calm the F- down, and dig up the personal number of the guy who I dealt with when my D600's went to sh*t. Then I need to spend the evening wondering why exactly it is I didn't switch when my brother offered me the chance.

Going to call B&H and see if someone there can help me out.

Call B&H and explain the issue. If you've had the body for less than 1 month, hopefully they will exchange it for you.

Good news and bad news with the folks at B&H. The good news is that they will be happy to swap mine for a new body, no problem. The bad news is that they do not have anything immediately available so I need to ship the body and wait for them to get the next shipment from Nikon (I cannot wait and have them notify me when one comes in - there's lots on backorder). The good news is that I would not go to the bottom of the wait list but would get something in the next shipment. The bad news is, no one knows when that is.

At least it's a resolution I can live with. I need the body this weekend, but they said that wasn't an issue and I can send it in next week, I just need to call back.

Gotta love B&H.

B&H is fantastic! Please keep in mind the issue I had with my D600. I exchanged the first D600 within 30 days due to oil spots. It was a package deal with freebies: an aftermarket battery, camera case, SDHD card, and possibly other items. When I exchanged it, I only sent back the D600 box but not the extra freebies. When B&H replaced the D600, the invoice listed it as $1888.99 instead of $1999.99 due to the freebies. Ordinarily it wouldn't have been a problem, but when I had the multiple oil spot problems, Nikon granted me a refund. They would only refund me the $1888.99 price because of how the invoice was written.

Of course, I still wanted a D610 so when I called B&H and explained what happened, they asked for a copy of the check stub then they credited me the difference in cost towards a new D610.

Not sure what all came with your D500, but please keep this in mind. ;)

Let me know if you'd like to meet up somewhere around Princeton--you can borrow my D7100 until a D500 becomes available. Never installed any firmware. The body has one of the Easy Cover silicone skins on it which can be removed--and I'm not worried about my D7100 getting some serious use.

It has a pretty low shutter count because I only used it for the drama productions and once or twice during worship. Don't care for the noise in low light--hence my decision to buy a teleconverter to be used with my FX bodies during worship. Surprisingly I need to use ISO 1600 or higher during worship so my D750 and D610 perform much better. If I want to use the teleconverter with DX outside, I still have my D90. ;) This shutter count might have been from the last photo taken. The number of shutter clicks you'd put on it isn't a concern because I know it may be a while before any D500's are available--and I know we are at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to shutter counts. Let me know. So really the only bad news is you would temporarily take a step back from your D500...not a step away from DX altogether. The only stipulation is you'd need to return it with the back button focus turned off as I don't use that and wouldn't know how to revert to my settings for triggering the shutter. :beguiled:

I'm happy to hear that B&H is taking care of you. Nikon "customer service" really seems to be a joke at times.
