D40x - faint multiple spots on bright backgrounds?

I have tried numerous lens' and the dots are still there so I am pretty sure it is the sensor.
It has been posted today back to Nikon (UK), I hope they do a good job.

I have the same kind of spots. I figured that it was my fault for taking the camera out and shooting for a couple of hours in 26 below zero weather. Never noticed them before that.

I have received back my quote from Nikon UK, an eye watering £165.00 !!!
How long would this clean take, it isn't even a service, just a clean :(
30 mins?
1 hour?
I am sorry but this seems extortionate for a clean, I could understand if it were to replace a part but a clean can be a regular event (who knows when it will need to be cleaned again)?

I have therefore declined this crazy quote and have ordered the Opteka LED sensor loupe, swabs and Eclipse cleaning fluid.
For the record I am extremely careful when changing lens and always face the camera down, do it quickly and would never do it in a windy/dusty enviroment.

To be honest I would rather attempt this myself very carefully and fail trying then pay this fee. Maybe it's me but after this quote I am not seeing any 'love' between Nikon and it's loyal customers :(

I just cleaned my D800 myself and yes it took a few goes but I got it spotless. You can do it but you do have to take precautions like everyone else has said. Yours by the looks will require a wet clean and may even require it to be repeated a few times. Just take your time in a clean environment and you will be all good.

At first I was thinking they wanted you to upgrade your camera. But then I thought, who would do that with a company that would hose you on a cleaning.

Maybe they figure we are only an entry level camera users.

I bet there are more 'entry level' users than 'professional users' and that the 'entry level' users add more to the Nikon coffer.
Nikon should do more to look after their 'bread & butter' consumers or lose them to Canon.

I have just finished cleaning the sensor with an Opteka loupe and treated swabs and.....eureka! The sensor is spotless and I have saved myself over £100.00 The fear of damaging the camera was finally overcome thanks to Nikons quote.

The local camera shop around here does it for $35 and they have specials where they do it for $10 on certain days I am never in town when they do though. :(
