d3300 flash problems

have a D3300 with a Godox V860ii N strobe
I am new to digital strobe photo
used the strobe on the hot shoe last week for indoor flat track roller derby.
message in meta data
Flash, compulsory, NO strobe return and Flash, compulsory, strobe return.
in the same photoshoot.

I usually use the strobe with the remote, with no problems.
I was told message is only when using the on camera or hot shoe strobe.

Must I tell the camera that I will be using on camera or remote strobe with the Godox gear?

thanks

No strobe return and strobe return refer to the whether TTL information was received by the camera when using an on camera flash.
You may want to do some research as to the TTL operations of that specific flash unit.

The first thing that came to my mind is that you are using it to shoot pictures of a roller derby. How far are you from the subject? If the distance is too great, there may not be enough light bouncing back to the flash for it to recognize. Have you tried the same setup at a fairly close distance?

When you use the strobe with a remote, are you placing it much closer to the subject, or in a position that illuminates the subject better?

yes roller derby
When you use the strobe with a remote, are you placing it much closer to the subject.
The remote is is 10 feet from subject on ground level, the strobe on second floor balcony about 30 feet away.
thanks
