You have to love that good old Florida Gulf Coast summertime weather. No fewer than FOUR waterspouts were kicked out by this line of thunderstorms. Fortunately, just like this one, they usually break up as soon as they hit land. This is why FL leads the nation in the NUMBER of tornadoes each year. Certainly not the most powerful but we have the most!

Holy smokes!

Just another day on the Gulf Coast of FL. We get water spouts all of the time, but this one was unusually large. We can get some very quick forming and violent thunderstorms in the summertime which often kick them out, either as waterspouts or just flat out tornadoes. A lot of these very large thunderstorms build offshore all day and then come ashore in the mid to late afternoon. It is not unusual for one to hit us, dump 1-2" of rain in 20 minutes and then just move on. Oftentimes the ones which can precede hurricanes can dump 8-9" before the hurricane even makes landfall. Our "soil" is very sandy and it does not take a lot to saturate it so we can get flash floods pretty easily. Fortunately I live in the highest part of town and the highest point in our neighborhood so for us flooding is not really an issue. We can get a couple of "lakes" in the front and back yard but none are close to the house.

In fact it is 6:10 in the evening as I write this and I just heard the first crack of thunder. Show time!!!!

Thanks for the information, I find water spouts interesting. I've seen two water spouts in my life. One at Carolina Beach, North Carolina. And one at Fairhaven beach,NY on Lake Ontario. There were much smaller. I would have liked to see them in person.

Waterspouts don't worry me. This is what scares the shit out of me living in Tennessee.

May 1st 2011. A few miles from our house
