$*&%(%^#^#@* Credit Thieves

I just got a new credit card on Jan 1st and have used it just three times.

This afternoon, the USAA fraud division contacted me about some suspicious use of my card. It had been used three times today, at two local grocery stores, for well over $500. I had not even been out of the house today, let alone visited two different grocery stores, each over 20 miles from my house, three times.

The good thing is that they saw the fraud quickly and turned the card off pending their discussion with me. After they contacted me, the card was locked and a fraud alert was placed upon its use for purchases.

I hope the scumbags (I'd have liked to use a different set of adjectives and nouns, but I'm being somewhat nice to those reading) get food poisoning from what they purchased on my card; the worse the better!!

Sucks man. But luckily it was found quickly. Sounds like they will not hold you accountable for the charges, and hopefully the t bags try and use the card again. Here's to a speedy arrest.

I know how you feel. Happened to me, I believe it was at a restaurant when I gave the waitress my card, as always, she takes it back to run it. I guess she copied it or something, my card company said they cloned my card. Tried to buy lots of things in a store twice in one day in a town Ive never been to. They caught it froze the card and I was not responsible for any charges. Im with you, hope they get what they deserve.

My card was charged once for $13.49, and we saw it on our monthly statement. I tracked down a phone number for the company where the transaction took place, and spoke with a man who said it was for a set of house plans. I never ordered any plans. We had to go through the pain in the butt actions of cancelling the card, disputing the charge, and waiting for new cards. The cards make life much easier, but when things go wrong, it is a bit of work to straighten it out.

We've had a card compromised 3 times in the last 5 years. Each time the credit card company contacted us within an hour of the fraud and proactively canceled it. Major PITA, but finding it on your own and disputing the charges is worse.

This is the second time that this has happened to me. The first time it took me 7-8 months to get it sorted out. (I found out the credit card company had a reputation for dragging the resolution process out. I can only speculate why.)

With USAA, they contacted me very shortly after the last transaction to inquire about the card's use, and have also informed me that the charges will not be my responsibility.

Jake, I sure hope that you're right about the resolution being easier if they contacted me.

Sparky, That's not funny!!! Oh, wait, yes it is.

Reminds me of the comedian whose wife's credit cards were stolen. When he reported it, the representative asked what he wanted to do about it. His reply as "Nothing. They aren't spending as much as my wife was with it!!"

Its been a bad year for the card companies. I had my main card replaced 3 times. The card company caught the first two. The 3rd time I caught it quickly because I had set up text alerts. It was two separate online orders for $699 each, so they were able to prevent a $1400 theft. I caught it while it was still a pending charge, so I did not have to dispute it but I still had to wait for a new card AGAIN.

I have USAA for Checking, My main Credit Card, Auto insurance and homeowners insurance. I have to say that they handled things quickly. Both my credit card and Debit card were replaced this last year because of some of the hacks on different companies. They have sent me texts several times asking if a charge was good or not. So far all their texts have been things I actually did buy.

I think I'm going to sign up for those texts. That and require two forms of ID and a matched DNA sample at every transaction...

Happened to me a few years back. Thing was the credit card company did not find it.
It was a new card. Never been used my me. Charges were used at different stores.
Called the company about it to see where and when it happened. Charges was for
over 800.00 dollars. Told them it was not me. Asked for places or states it was used in.
They told me it was done in different cities. So I told them it could not have bee me.
I have proof cause in my work I have to use a log book.It records the date, city, state
and time I was there. So after faxing copies of the date and city, state I was in the charges
were removed.

Just got new cards two days ago because of hack a week ago. CC company caught it just as they have on two or three other occasions in the past 3 or 4 years. Maybe the CC companies will get the chip cards yet. Hmmm!

i have only had it happen to me once. i was in the ukraine and wanted to pick up some cash from an ATM, the hungry little bugger swallowed my card! I cancelled the card there and then. ABout one month later I got a call from Mastercard asking me if I had recently withdrawn money in Thailand. I told them no, that was the end of the story, never heard anything again. would be interesting to know if the two event were connected in any way.

I have heard that now the technology exists that crooks can scan your credit cards within a certain proximity while they re still in your wallet! That is crazy. Need to buy a lead wallet now or what?

Hope you get this sorted soon anyways.

My Son went to Thailand for a holiday just recently, on his second day there he tried to use his card in an ATM to get some money out. While he was standing there at the ATM, his bank rang his mobile phone and asked where he was, he told them and they let the transaction go through.

Shows that they can vigilant at times, I thought it was pretty amazing.

Just think how much better the world would be if these very clever scumbags would turn their skills to good instead of bad.

Sorry to hear about your cards, but pleased it got sorted very quickly.

My hubby recently had a phone call from a bank he has some savings with asking if he had recently set up a new account with an overdraft facility and credit card... he said he hadnt, so the bank have closed the account. We are still trying to figure out where they got the details from to open an account in his name!

What would truly be worse is if they used the card to purchase Canon Equipment. ( But then they will have to live with their lapse in judgment ;). )

A few years back our credit card company called and asked if we were in the UK. Some one bought movies tickets there. They canceled the card. A few days later they called again, some one bought chocolates in the UK on my husbands business credit card. They canceled that card also. We weren't charged for either transaction. Guess they were testing the cards, because both charges combined were about $50US.

The only way the info could have been taken on both cards was if some one scanned his wallet. It was just before Christmas and we had no credit cards. We now use RFID wallets.

Edit: I knew aluminum foil works, but he's a link to make your own wallet - How To Make A RFID Blocking Wallet
