I think the bigger question is how can you get one soon? The demand is still high and the supplies are just barely coming in. With the NPS folks getting the priority, it will be months before you can get one. The D800 is a game changer camera. I don't do large prints and I am just an enthusiast. It is hard to justify anything if your end in mind is to be practical especially in today's economy. If your gut is telling you not to get one then don't especially if your spouse (if you are married) will oppose to your decision.

Re: DX lenses. You can still achieve up to 15mp if you use your DX lenses but that would be a waste if you are not going to maximize it's full potential especially if you are going to do larger prints. Your 50mm might be able to do the work.

Getting the D800 would also mean additional expenses to upgrade your computer or purchase 1 or 2 TB hard drive to store those enormous files. How about memory cards? You'll need at least 64gb sd or CF cards.

I cancelled my D4 pre-order and re-ordered the D800E version for the second time since I had a hard time deciding. Adding the 28mm f1.8G lens from Nikon that was just announced has spiked the total damage to just over $4k. Ouch! :boxing:

I can appreciate your logic. You're making sense. Along with an upgrade to the D800, comes additional upgrading of one's computer hard drive to memory cards to possibly a new wife . . . ;)

ok,, don't convince yourself, I have a D700 and D800, I framed a shot with a 50 mm prime lens, and than looked at a cross section of a 3 inch I beam, about 5 feet, and while the D700 was good, zoomed in the pixelation lost the detail, where the D800 showed the fine details. What does it mean is that the need for sharpening has been reduced dramatically, a requirement, nope, but a pleasure to use. Once I compared the noise of of the D800 to the D700 and find that the hype of matching the D700 was true, well, it cinches it, the D700 is collecting dust.
So,, after 10 years of using the digital cameras, I can say that the D800 is changed the game for the effect of carrying medium format camera in a 35 mm slr format.
and found the lens resolve quite well at 35 Million Pixels. maybe we are close to the limits, but I think that the D800 is not yet quite done.
