Command dial issues

I have had my d5100 for almost 2 years without any issue. Then, suddenly, the command dial started to mess up. When i rotate it clockwise, it drags the live view switch which then turns on live view. When I rotate it counterclockwise, it clicks as it should for about 75% of the rotation, then starts to feel gummed up and laggy. This doesn't happen in the same spot each time. Any ideas on how to repair it?

edit: to be clear, i meant the mode dial. Usually it happens when switching through the P,S,A,and M modes

I received a quote from an authorized nikon repair shop, for $200, which seems excessive. I was hoping to be able to take the dial apart to examine it, but have not been able to find any instructions on how.

I'm guessing something got spilled? Maybe pop? This happens to my remote.. the down button gets sticky. I take a little hydrogen peroxide on a q-tip and dab it around the area, the hit the botton a bunch of times to work it in. Not sure this will be the smartest for an expensive camera.. but it works for a 150$ remote. lol

I'l fairly confident nothing spilled on it, I'm probably a little too protective of this camera. There are not any stains or residue that I can see.

It feels like the something wrong with the gear teeth. I am afraid of trying to remove the dial to examine the gears, I'll be in a bad spot if I can't get it back together properly.

Has anyone successfully removed/replaced the mode dial?
