There is a GAU-8 (A-10 Warthog) down the street from my office. When they test it, it really gets your attention. That must be even more of an attention getter as it's on a ship!

The concept is to block an incoming missle or aircraft by firing a burst of bullets which acts like a "net" of bullets. These are the last final defense if the ship was unable to intercept the missle with surface to air missile.

The other weapons in the picture are the Harpoon launchers and Surface Vessel Torpedo Tubes.
