Cheap filters can harm lenses

I will need to double check to be absolutely sure, but none of my Nikon or Sigma glass that accepts filters has a front element that extends far enough forward to potentially make contact with a filter, wide and saggy or otherwise. Their point about wider filters is probably the most relevant as even with tight tolerances these could bulge if too thin. It's like my friend and I say with motorcycle helmets here in NJ (where they're required), "$10 helmet, $10 head." If you're not willing to protect your investment with quality gear, why bother protecting it, or investing in it in the first place?

It's not that the filters are cheap, just some lenses have protruding front elements. Lens manufacturers often sell there own filters, and will take the lens design into consideration. Throwing any filter onto any lens that it screws into can cause damage. The Canon 50/1.2 in Leica mount comes to mind, as do many of my Schneider lenses. The 90/4 Tele-Arton: I'm going to make an extender.
