Card Reader vs USB Cable

Something to check on. The 4 GB card is a high capacity type and you also need a high capacity card reader to download. So the card reader is probably not a high capacity type. Where as the camera is a high capacity reader and can do the download. The 2 GB card is not high capacity and the card reader is able to read that one. Hope this helps.

Yep, it sure did help; you were absolutely correct....!
I found I had another multi-card reader in my electronics 'junk drawer' (another cheap Chinese one called an "Ohm"), and this automatically starts up Elements 6.0 when I insert the 4GB card and reads it in perfectly.!!.

AFA the debate goes, I too would rather use a card reader than my much loved D40 as input to the PC!
-Because I feel that whenever you have to constantly plug-unplug something as delicate as USB slots/plugs, there's a stronger possibility that something might bend or break. So I keep my card reader permanently plugged into a PC USB slot with a long cable, and it sits readily available and next to my keyboard alla time. -My thinking here has nothing to do with battery use (I always have a fully charged spare anyway); it's just that should there be a problem I'd rather lose the card (and even some much wanted photos) than have any problem with my D40... :(

Hey, Nikon's not making my baby anymore; I have to take care of her!! ;)

The most important thing I find about this thread, is the ability for all to give their openion, and the others respect each other. Thanks Guys and Gals. Me

I also have an Ohm, works fine everytime! I hope your D40 works forever.

I use the USB cable that came with my camera to download to LR3. Never had any trouble with that combination. Besides I don't have a card reader that will accept CF cards. Maybe for Christmas.
