Card read errors

I am having constant problems with "card read errors" and also at times will not display some images in camera that has previously. Took to my retailer and work completed was "dismantled camera, image control printed circuit board replaced, assembled, adjusted and cleaned, image sensor cleaned and test". The problems persist. I have spoken again to my retailer who can only just say bring it back in. I have noted that others have had this problem and there is a referral to upgrading firmware. Not being up on this type of thing--I wonder why this was not done at time of original repairs. Your help people, what would you do--it still within the warranty period. I am one unhappy Nikon lady at the moment. I dont know how to check what firmware the camera is currently working on. How do I check this--or just hand back to the retailer and fall back on my good old D80 in the meantime.
Your help and suggestions will be appreciated

Hi Heather, and welcome to Nikonites. The steps to update your firmware are all in the manual. Secondly, some D7000's had focus problems. Hopefully, yours wasn't one of them. The serial number of your camera will be a clue as to which category yours falls into.

Now...onto the "card read" errors. Use a Class 10 card.....doesn't matter how many GB's it is.....just use a Class 10 card. Secondly, after taking photos, download them to your computer. Then, before you take more pictures with the same card, reformat the card IN CAMERA! Do this every time. It's all in your manual, which strangely enough, a lot of people hate to read. :)
Hope this helps.

My 5100 Manual says and I quote "Memory cards must be formatted before first use or after being formatted in other devices" No where does it say they should be formatted each time they are placed in camera. I used to do real-estate photography and would take cards in and out of the camera sometimes two or three a day, and never re formatted them and never had any trouble. Just my take on the subject. Just make sure the camera is turned off before you remove it and when in your computer it tells you the device is safe to remove.

Sane advice!

Card error is far more likely than camera error and quicker to test.

So far I have not reformatted my card but I have used it in and out of the camera a whole whole lot since I got the camera. No problems at all so far. Cards are so cheap I think I need a dozen.

Thank you all for your responses.
First of all I have tried all the options with cards ie new and different gb, formatting before use and also when reused have reformatted. And yes always in camera. Sorry I cant try a Walmart card, but more importantly didn't know what a Class 10 card was. Have now identified that all the cards that I have used are in deed Class 10 cards.
My manual is always with me Jack; have no worries about that--I just needed to be reminded to look at it for the firmware version--thanks for that.
My firmware version is 1.02 1.02 1.002. I note on the Nikon site that there is an upgrade to: 1.03.
One of the reasons being to quote: Modifications enabled with B firmware Ver. 1.03
 • An error where the card may not have been recognized when some memory cards were used has been addressed.
I am surprised that if that is the option that the repairers of my camera did not take this course in May when they replaced the "image control circuit board".
I should add I have no problems with focusing--whether in auto or manual which I use more frequently. The Serial No of my Nikon is 8139963.

My question remains--would you upload the new firmware or take back to the retailer.
Cheers

Why are you even asking the question, are you worried that updating your firmware will invalidate your warranty?
Surely if the firmware update doesn't resolve your issue you can still return it.

Yep, in a way worrying me just a little. I know sounds a "little weak" but have had problems in the past with other electronic equipment and warranties. I have posted the question direct to Nikon as well. Just wanted to get a feeling as to what other would do in the same instance.
Thank you all for your help--I am quite happy to say--matter closed for now.

To resolve your issue, download and install the updated firmware. No need to take it back to the retailer for such a simple operation. :) Let us know how it turns out for you.

Have uploaded the new version, so will test. Interestingly though, when I formatted the new card "in camera" lap top would not read. So downloaded bin file on to another empty card that has not been in my camera and tried that and that worked. Will now do some testing re the different cards etc.
I must admit I am getting a bit tired of buying new cards all the time. A card that has been in the D7000 can not be read by my D80! Hopefully things will change.
Cheers
