In P mode the camera sets shutter speed and aperture for optimal exposure(user can rotate command dial to choose from different combinations of shutter speed and aperture that will produce optimal exposure) recommended for snapshots and in other situations in which there is little time to adjust camera settings. This was out of my d3100 user manual. But it seems that when using the P mode setting you must program it letting the camera handle it from there. I never used that mode so far so this is the best I can do. I hope this info will help. But I'm still too much of a newbie to be able to trouble shoot. But there are other members here who are much more knowledgeable than I am. :) oops it looks like they beat me to it. Lol :) I'm too slow at typing I guess. Lol :D
