Cannot connect wifi D5300 to Samsung Galaxy S8

I purchased a D5300 body to connect wifi to my Samsung S8 to download the pictures but I cannot get it to connect up. I go into the camera menu and enable wifi and the camera shows the message "waiting for connection". I already had downloaded the WMU app so I open that and tap on the wifi gadget in the upper corner of the app. My phone wifi screen opens and after a few moments the phone shows connected to the camera with the message "internet may not be available". I go back to the WMU app and it says the phone is not connected.
Any suggestions?

A further note, about 30 seconds after the phone has "connected" to the camera the "waiting for connection" message will flash "error" then disconnect

Do you have Mobile data on? If so, please switch it off and connect to Camera's wifi. I have seen it work.

OK, I got it to work. First I had to tell my phone to forget my home Wifi so it would not automatically connect to that. Next on the camera I enabled Wifi, then on Network settings I had to select push-button WPS.
Then on my phone in the wifi settings I had to select WPS push button. After about 20 seconds they connected up. Finally I went to the WMU app and it allowed me to download the camera pictures to my phone.

It should be easier in the future, now that you've made that initial connection. I remember having to go through something similar when I first connected to the D5300 ... but being a wifi guy, I also went down the rabbit hole of trying to make the wifi link more secure. Now that WPA is setup (via the WPS option you used), you should be good to go.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ and this is pretty much what I did, following your guide here. I tried to connect to WMU a week or so ago after I downloaded it, to no avail!

I turned off data and didn't "forget" my wifi, but unchecked the box to autoconnect to it. Next, enabled the D5300 wifi, and it was doing the "connecting to" thingy that it does. The camera didn't give me the option this time for WPS connection, like it did a week ago, but I did get it to connect. I took 10 or so pics with the phone remote shutter button, and turned it off and back on. It worked! I assumed that it would work if I turned the camera off, so I put the phone away and now I am thinking that I should have tried that as well. Oh well, it works now! Thank you all!

Happy to see you got it to work. It can be finicky sometimes.
