Can the D5100 crop in the camera?

I have searched the manual and cannot find cropping a photo in the D5100. I did find resize, but that's not what I'm looking for. My husband and I were viewing playback and I zoomed in on the gators eye. Is there any way to save that in the camera or do I have to wait until I get home and do it on the computer?

Thanks for your help!

Marilynne, good detail on that cropped eye.. That was a heavy crop too.. I never use use the trim as I prefer the better view on the puter screen... It does work though, I tried some when I got my camera... and you proved it here! Nice Job!

I prefer it on the computer also, but my husband kept pushing the issue. I don't know why you'd want to do it in the camera since you really don't know if the picture is good or not on the little monitor.

If I remember correctly... it is non destructive, the cropped becomes a second image... Maybe he just wanted to know if the cropped Comp would look good...

happy saturday!

One problem I see with TRIM in the camera is that it won't let you decide where to crop it and unlike the gator, it's a lot grainer.

The multi selector button will let you move the crop to any position in the frame.
I use it a lot to re-compose for the rule of thirds or to remove an annoying object.

I tried that and it didn't move the trim box. I'll keep playing. Gotta learn something new at least once a day.

BTW, while I was looking for a crop function, I found Perspective Control which I should have used when I did the silo from the ground looking straight up.

Lots to learn!!

Hummm? I just took a test shot -- went to menu -- clicked trim -- clicked test shot -- clicked the zoom in to make the trim area smaller and then held mutli selector arrow left, right up , down and moved the trim selection box everywhere in the frame.

OK, it worked. Don't know what I was doing wrong this morning. I tried a few times.
