I want BE ready. To that end have you considered a simple sling strap, like a Black Rapid or a BosStrap? Either of these put the strap across your body (and off your neck!) while keeping your camera secure from snatching. They leave your hands free for when you need them AND give you instantaneous access to your camera. Might be something to think about. I actually have both a Black Rapid and Bos and I use them both.
