buying nikon D90 body: What lens can i include with it?

HELP!! i'm planning to buy nikon d90 body this month and i was wondering what lens should i include with my purchase a walk around lens that is cheap but still a good lens.
My budget is around $1200...

hope you can help me guiisseee

Well, the body will run you about $750...assuming you're buying it new. That leaves $450 for a lens, which puts you in middle to lower-end range of available lenses. You will also need a memory card, so don't forget about that expense. How about an extra battery? Maybe a camera bag and/or tripod? If you get the D90 w/ 18-105mm kit lens, it's about $980, still leaving you with around $200 to play with...and you'll already have a decent all-purpose lens.

Just my 2 cents here, but everyone always buys some extra gear to go with their new camera. So if your budget is $1200, it may make more sense to get the D90 kit and save up for a better lens down the road.

Oh ic, tnx for replying :D...
is 18-105 kit lens a good lens?,
how about third party lenses, can you recommend some?
also i'm thinking to include 18-200 sigma OS HSM lens, do you think its a nice walk around camera for d90..

I totally agree with Anthony on his choice of the 180105. Great all around lens. As for the Sigma, it is also an excellent choice.

The reviews I've read on the Sigma lens is that it is a good walk around lens for the budget minded photographer. It gives good performance for it's price range. If your an aspiring photographer wanting to learn DSLR techniques then this is a good lens to start with. It is however a lens that you will quickly grow out of and will leave you looking for better glass down the road. I have to agree with Anthony and Jack and recommend the 18-105mm kit lens to start with. It's a lens that you can grow into and with the D90 you will have a very good lens and body combination that can produce great shots. I also recommend you complete your profile with a little information about yourself, camera, lens and any other equipment you are using. That will help us help you with any questions you may have. This is a great site to ask questions and solve problems. Enjoy your new D90.

All kit lenses are "okay". It is what it is...a starter lens. Are you going to notice or appreciate the difference between a kit lens and an $800 lens just starting out? No, probably not. But the 18-105 gives you a great all-purpose lens to get your feet wet and decide for yourself what kind of specialty lens you may want down the road. Depending on what type of subjects you like shooting, you will find yourself saying things like:

  • "I wish I had more zoom on this lens!"
  • "Too bad I don't have macro, I really like taking photos of flowers and bugs."
  • "Hmm...I wonder what the best portrait lens is for the D90?"
After shooting for awhile, you can make a more informed decision of what your next lens purchase should be. The Sigma 18-200 gives you some more range, but at least in my opinion, it's not an upgrade. There are many other lenses discussed in the lens section of the forums.

If you've really got money burning a hole in your pocket for a different lens, check out the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 prime. It's a fantastic lens for about $130.
