Hey how's it going I'm new to the nikon world hope i found a good forum to join. Recently picked up a Nikon D40 found a deal on craigslist Brand new D40 still in the plastic. I'm suprised mainly because most people selling stuff via craigslist it isn't as good as they say haha but talked the lady down to $320 total so can't go wrong there I hope I made a good purchase!

Barely taken about 35 clicks so far just messing around with it. Already ordered a wide angle lens mainly because I always loved photos that had them. Is there anything I should know about this camera in particular? I don't necessarily want to become a photographer but I've always loved photography and had great respect for amazing photographers!

Hi and welcome Dave. The only thing you should know about this Nikon is that it will take practice to learn how to use it and make great shots. The D40 is a very capable camera and can be a great learning tool.

Enjoy your Nikon!

thanks! I love it already ordered a wide angle lens already haha, A buddy of mine said I should look into getting a 35mm F/1.8G lens
is it a big difference from the lens the camera comes with?

The main difference is that the 35 1.8 has a larger aperture and, since it only has one focal length can produce sharper images in darker conditions. It's a great little lens that's handy to carry with you.

cool any places where I can buy a decent one at? or should I learn how to make the best of the kit lens first? and is there any places on here where I can see images with both lenses and how they differ?

I always suggest you make the best of what you have before you spend any money. You will know when it is time to upgrade.

This is why we ask people to fill out their profile, so we know where they live when they ask questions like this. :) Prices vary all over the planet, so it's nearly impossible to answer this without knowing where you are. :)

By the way, besides my D200, I, too, own a D40, and it's a great little camera. Stick with your 18-55 for now, and the time will come when you can move up to a 35mm lens. I should tell you that your camera takes AF-S lenses. You can use AF lenses, but you'll have to shoot manually.
AF-S = lens has built in focus motor
AF = no built in focus motor.
High end camera have built in focus motors, so they can use either lenses. Unfortunately, the D40 does not.

haha my apologies well I'm usually in and out of the country, im sure i could find something online when the time comes I just wasn't sure if people have preferred places they go. Also shooting manually is it a lot harder? or just something I'd have to get used to? and here's a quick pic before I log off for the day, it's nothing special
