Blurry photos on auto sport mode

My D5100 is my first SLR so I am still learning. However, I like taking photos of my dogs and sisters kids, but find on auto sport mode the photos are always blurry when anyone is moving.

How do I eliminate this problem?

Is it likely to be the camera is faulty or is this common with this camera?

Thanks

No No
Slow shutter speeds and movement are the causes of blurry images...Put your camera in Aperture Priority and set your auto focus to AF-S or AF-A and maybe up the ISO...See how you go with these settings...
Have a look at you tube there is some good information about all subjects...

Blurry photos are a result of a shutter speed not being fast enough to freeze the action. I would put the camera in S (shutter priority). You will then pick the shutter speed, fast enough to freeze the action. The camera will pick everything else. I would change your focus to AF-C continuous focus.

I agree with Moab man, shutter priority. Start at 1/500, or faster. If you find you are needing to up the ISO for a fast shutter speed, you need to slow the shutter down or accept a raised ISO.

Aperture priority is for controlling depth of field. If you set the aperture to your lenses widest, it will automatically speed up your shutter but it will be random on each shot rather than fixed. You need to be in control of your shutter for sports.

Oh, and I almost always have ISO on auto, set to 100 and allowing up to 3200 as a maximum.
That way you set your shutter and the camera does the rest of the work to get a good exposure.
Depending on the background, you may need to adjust + or - exposure compensation.

I should make this a Sticky, as it seems it needs to be repeated often:

Rule of thumb: if it moves - Shutter Priority
if it doesn't move - Aperture Priority
