By having the plate the strap connects to the bottom edge of the camera which, to me, makes it more stable and not swing or spin as much. This plate also allows you to still connect a quick connect so a tripod can be used without removing anything. And the finnal reason is that is less than half the price of the Black Rapid.  I am only giving you my reasons for my purchase and I am not trying to convince you to get one over the other. It also came with the extra little strap to go under your arm but I do not use it.</blockquote>
