I intend to buy a Nikon 300mm 2.8 with a 2.0 teleconverter, and I wonder whether it is possible hand held or i need a monopod.Does anyone have experience with monopods?
I find interesting Manfrotto 681 B. Then i would still need tilt head. Which one???

I keep it locked down at 90º and never tilt it... instead, I just rock/tilt the entire monopod... and mostly just balance the camera and lens...I never found the load capacity to be a hindrance.. I use a D600 w/28-300 f3.5...

I have a 300mm f/2.8 AIS Nikkor which I occasionally use with my TC-300 when I don't want to drag out the 600mm f/4 AIS behemouth. I have no problem handholding down to 1/250 with my arms braced into my body but anything above that I usually use a monopod. I have a Slik monopod I got on Fleabay about 10 years ago and it has suited me perfectly through the years. It even has a fold down step at the bottom so you can steady the thing with your foot as well!

I have a 680B with a 234RC and it works great. I don't use the tilt a lot, but the times I have I was very glad to have it. Sometimes you just can't lean that far. I use it predominantly with a Sigma 150-500mm

I have a Manfrotto 079 monopod and a Benro MP 68 M8. Both are used for different purposes. The Manfrotto (24.5" closed) is about 5" taller than the Benro (19 3/8" closed). I use either one when a tripod is not practical, such as limited space, or when shooting fast moving sports, such as motorcycle races, etc. I picked up both on Kijiji for about $20 each.
