Best lenses for Nikon D800

Was just going to post something about this. Was pleasantly surprised to see my Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 was ranked #2 after the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 in the Standard Zoom ranked. A little disappointed to not have the 24-85mm kit lens listed to see how it compares. I'm a fan of both, but have the Sigma up for sale currently (hint-hint).

I hate reading these things, but outside of chromatic aberration it is almost on a par, or better, than the Nikkor. I'm guessing the major reason that the lens didn't rank higher was inconsistencies across the zoom range. Or am I misunderstanding you? Not sure what you mean by "individual parameters".

Zeiss tanked. What a drag. I really like Zeiss as a company and would buy their lenses if they were only even just a bit better than the Nikon, but they are not and in fact significantly worse. There's no excuse for that considering what Zeiss puts into their other products.

DXo testing does not include bokeh, distortion, and other factors which may factor on your lens selection. Some prefers the characteristics of the Zeiss and some still do but are not willing to pay for the higher price. The good thing is that you have "options".

The data also supports the idea that if you can afford Nikon, it can be your default without much risk. Any purchase requires some research, but you are unlikely to go wrong if you confine you choices to Nikon. I am very surprised how poorer Zeiss did. JD

The issue that I find troubling is that Dxo didn't include the legendary Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 since it leaves the impression that it didn't make the cut.

My Nikon 16-35mm f4 and 28mm f1.8G scored well so I'm ok on what lenses I have. I am considering the 50mm f1.8G for video purposes. A 1 stop difference is pretty big when it comes to video.

The report from DxOMark has introduced a new metric of lens sharpness that it's calling the 'Perceptual MegaPixel'. It does not include how smooth the lens is when using manual focus, auto focus, nor it does not report lens distortions and CA. This data however is a good tool to see how it performs with the monstrous 36 and 24 mp cameras.

I don't see anything troubling about it. They simply have yet to test the 14-24, the VRII version of the 70-200 and some others, so they couldn't be included. I'd rather have the article now which can be updated as new lenses are tested then to wait until every Nikon mount lens has been tested....which would be never.

I actually spoke with Zeiss about these test results....rather interesting conversation ensued about their lens quality....wondering if I should share it hehe.
