Best images storage method/medium?

In another post I made in another forum I was told that CD/DVD was not the best medium on which to store images. If not on those two choices, what is the best way to store them other than on the computer hard drive?

If I were mailing images to someone, other than using email, what would be the best device/storage to use?

SD cards are too expensive to give away.

You can get a pretty big external hard drive for pretty cheap now that they're being produced and the factories are open again. I store all my pictures on an external hard drive, and use Lightroom to organize/edit them, and if they REALLY need editing, they get thrown into CS6. But an external hard drive is a fast/easy/cheap way to go.

As far as mailing... you could look into Blu-Ray's. They hold much larger file sizes, and have came down in price. Or you could get a website, and password protect albums just for clients. I know a few people on here have that set-up, and could help you more out with the website sharing.

To send someone images, a CD or DVD is just fine.

For long-term storage, multiple hard drives kept in multiple PO addresses.

I store mine on my HD and then I have another drive to back them up. Most make their way to flickr as well.

I think DVDs or CDs would work fine too for mailing.

You'll get varying answers but I don't view CDs as long term storage. And I don't like how static the data is once you store it. If I had to break my current stock of photos into 4GB increments to accommodate the size of DVDs I'd be creating more work for myself.

external Hard drives and online. I use zenfolio, no limit with my account. Biggest problem is uploading large files takes a long time so I upload at night.

The higher the MP cameras go makes the storage issues major.

I you purchase really high quality archive DVD's (not walmart specials) they do provide a good long term storage media, but the storage capacity is not convenient with todays file sizes.

GoDaddy has very affordable on line storage.

Is there any quality loss storing on DVD or CD even if used for short term? I mostly want a good way to put images onto a medium that I can physically send someone if they want a "hard" copy.

Still, in todays USA, not everyone has broadband connections to download large files. Even with my DSL connection, that is severely neutered due to my location, uploading large files is sometimes excruciating.

Everything is 1s and 0s now so it is either good or bad. So no quality loss with DVDS or CDs as long as they are not scratched or have gotten too hot and possibly warped. Then they just would not be readable, so no photo at all.

I use a local disk and cloud storage which auto backup every night. I have fibre broadband now so even my upload is 17 Mbps which makes this very practical, even with D800 raw files.

CD/DVD have a finite life so they are not the best long term storage option.
