Best Buy extended warranty?

I know this is kinda late notice but I'm planning on going to pick up a D3200 today. Best Buy has it $100 off, on sale for $499. I have around $200 in gift cards, so figured I'd go buy the 3200. Which will be my first dslr.

My question is: should I buy the extended warranty? I almost never buy it and am leaning that way again but with this being my first DSLR, didn't know if that same thinking applies.

Best Buys price is 1yr for $49, 2yr for $99 & 4yr for $199.

Financially speaking, warranties like that are a huge waste of money. Companies have invested a great deal of money to determine that is is THEIR best interest to offer those. They are a huge money maker for them.

For a 'feel good' comfort, some people like them.

Personally, I never pay for extended warranties for anything. I base that on my personal experience and what I mentioned above.

Just my $.02.

Purchase the item with a credit card that will extend the warranty by another year (beyond the manufacturer's warranty). That's a big reason why I use Amex for all my purchases.

But now that I think about it, using the gift cards would probably mess that up since the entire purchase would not be on the card.

I'd suggest you pass on the warranty on a camera, unless you're out shooting in really adverse conditions. There are certain items that are high-risk, and you can justify purchasing a warranty for. I recently purchased a HP printer because I've gone through 3 printers over the past 10 years, so I felt that purchasing my warranty via HP, was a good idea. I called HP to troubleshoot my current printer. After our feeble efforts of resolving my issue failed, the HP-phone rep offered me a newer printer with 3 years of warranty coverage for an additional $30. Plus, I was able to negotiate the cost of the printer, by going to the Bestbuy site, while the HP rep had my computer in remote. She saw that Bestbuy had a lower price, so she got her supervisor to lower the original cost of the printer by $10, matching Bestbuy's price. So now, I have a new printer, with 3 years of unlimited customer service support and a guarantee of replacement, if the printer has an issue that can't be resolved. I don't have to go to a retailer. I can call HP directly.

The extended warranties have saved us money on several occasions. Got a new steam cleaner, head phones, new camera and other items because I spent a little extra money on it.

to me it's insurance.

I don't buy it all the time, but I have on a few items and it paid off.
