Battery/Grip

I think I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a D7100. Is the battery different than the D80? And what is the purpose of a grip? Pros/cons?

Battery grips help in a variety of ways. They give double the session time before you need to recharge, balance the camera better when using heavier lenses, make tilting the camera on it's side for shots much easier, and it's also helpful for those who have large hands to feel more in control of the camera with the better grip it offers them. :)

That sums it pretty well!

Have a look here: Nikon | Imaging Products | Nikon D7100

There is one additional benefit of the battery grip that I have found.
That is when taking images in the portrait orientation there is a shutter release plus wheels to adjust shutter speed, aperture (depending upon what mode you are in), plus the lock button. In other words pretty much the same set up as in landscape orientation.....IMHO very useful.

My D5100 needed one to make it fit me,still not decided about the D7000 may be not,if you could try one at a local dealers it will probably be an instant like or dislike.

The D80 uses the EN-EL3e battery, the D7100 uses the EN-EL15 battery.

If you want a spare I can highly recommend the Wasabi battery. It's a third the cost of the Nikon OEM battery and works *exactly* like a factory-chipped Nikon battery.

As for battery grips for the D7100, I don't like them. They're bulky, it didn't fit well in my camera bag, I didn't like how it made the camera hang at my hip from my BosStrap and if I need to change batteries it takes about two seconds to do so. Not too mention the D7100 battery life is just about ridiculous. The D7100 is so freakin' ergonomic that even when shooting portrait-frames the camera feels like a glove on my hand. I had a battery grip on my D7100 for about twenty minutes before I sent it back. Just not for me.

I own a D80 and a D5100. For my D5100 I just got a Battery Grip and I am pleased with it. My D80 fits well in my hands without a grip. Would I buy if I am going to use the D80 more - Absolutly yes. I just look around in shops and saw the Nikon MB-D80. I think the price is great.
