Mike, I'm a big guy with big hands. So I use an aftermarket grip on my D90 and for my long exposure nightime bridge shots am always mounting them (grip & D90 w/70-300mm lens) on my tripod with no fear whatsoever. Believe me it's definetely strong enough. My D90 grip doesn't require the the cable connector thing, but I have seen a couple of D3xxx's and D5xxx's that do and I agree with you it would be a major nuisance. The reason I bought the MeiKe multi power batterry grip instead of the Nikon MB-D80 battery grip is cost the Meike battery grip with an extra Nikon EN-EL3 battery costs $90.00 new. While the Nikon MB-D80 battery grip with an EN-EL3 battery costs $180.00 or 2X as much.
