Hi , I have assigned AE-L / AF-L as my back focus button and Focus Mode to AF-C ! Now I focus on my subject and shot ... Snap no problemo ! However I don't always want to have the subject in the centre , some times I like to mix it up and have my subject off centre, but I focus on said subject reframe press the shutter .... Nothing ! Will not fire ! So what am I doing wrong ?

Try using AF-S! AF-C is continuos focus. Single point AF-S, and if you can just move the focus point and then snap.

For this technique to work properly you need to set release priority. That tells the camera to snap the shutter even when not in focus (since you focused and re-composed). D5100... menu A1.

No still will not fire ! If I hold the shutter half way as I focus it will shoot! So why use the bbf ?

You lost me there. Not sure what you mean. Back button is set to af-on, menu A1 set to release priority. In this condition, the shutter will fire whenever you push it. So hold the back button and you get continuous focus. Or release the back button and the focus stays where it was. In either case the shutter button does not do the focusing and it will always fire the shutter.

Taking a single static shot using BBF, press AF-On once (it focuses), let go the button, press shutter button. Done.
Taking a moving shot, hold the AF-ON button continuously, press shutter button to take the shot. Done.

Ok let's step through this
1, back button set as AF-on CHECK
2, Menu A1 set to Release CHECK
3. set Focus Mode to AF-S CHECK
4, bbf on subject CHECK
5, take shot CHECK
6, bbf on subject reframe CHECK
7, press shutter ??? Nothing !
so what's going on ? Hold AF-L and she fires !

Your step #3... You need to be in AF-C not af-s. AF-S was mentioned in post 2, but I think he missed that you were trying the back button focus technique. In a regular focus-recompose you would want af-s, but for bb focus you want af-c with release priority.

Its good, but he neglects to mention you need to be in release priority. he does mention it in the comments under the video.
