Back button focus , disables lateral tracking off center point?

I had the focus lock ON set to its longest, In D51 ( for worst case scenario) Heck that camera followed birds right down into the grass, snagged dragonflies as easily as ever and just in general got suck a nice solid focus lock on everything, and stayed 'on distance' for a donkey that had his head down for several minutes and only briefly raised it.
