Auto Distortion Control

The 16-85mm Lens has a bit Distortion. I testet LR, Capture and the in Camera Auto Distortion Control.

The Auto Distortion Control got the best and fastest result for jpg's files.

Capture NX 2 was for RAW the best. DxO Optics Pro 8 was very slowly. Lightroom 3.6 is almost as good as Capture NX 2

Here the result of Auto Distortion Control in Camera D5100:

Look to the yellow and white pillar.

Most and just about every wide angle lenses have distortion. Once you go above 35mm, it becomes less.

What was the focal length did you use?

Some folks have reported that the feature distinctly "softens/blurs" the detail in the image... It's also a buffer killer if you do a lot of multiple shot shooting...

This really isn't all that distorted, it's unlevel. The pole and sign in the distance show this as they are as crooked as the large poles to the left. With extreme Barrel distortion the objects near the edges are curved and center objects are normal. In this case the entire image is crooked, you just need to level the horizon. The pole to the right also demonstrates that this is not distortion, if it were, it would be leaning in to the right

Another thing to keep in mind when shooting wide is that any angles will be appear more extreme. You can reduce distortion effects by remaining perpendicular to subject and try to maintain equal elevation to the center of the subject.

Yesterday I took lots of pictures ( trees, daughter swimming in the pool, statues and laandscapes ) and I think that the ooc without Auto Distortion Control on was a superb result. Even I took jpg's. Correction on the PC didn't satisfy me only the original were exactly how I saw on the place I took the photos. I think LR is just fine with me to straighten up the photos.

Yes, I stick to LR for that also. Sometimes I want the distortion on purpose anyway.

I bought LR$ but didn't upgrade to Windows 7 yet. By installing LR4 the error came saying "Windows XP not supported.

Here in Thailan de've got lots of problems with software. Very difficult to find original. Copies no Problems just for about 2 US$.

The beta is a full version... it's just got something like a 30 trial date... other than that, it's good to go... It sees your earlier version and uses the preferences but doesn't import your existing catalogue, and cautions against using real existing photos, etc as it is a beta...

I would guess they're pretty cose to the new version, barring any real weird issues that crop up in the beta... The healing brush has been totally re-worked too... much better... If you have the time, and computer resources, and if you use LR... you really should download and play with it... At least, watch the new videos that highlight the new improvements...

I should mention... the beta installs along-side your existing LR, and does NOT replace it... allowing you to delete the beta without any impact on your existing LR installation... Sorry if I sound like a shill for LR...
