Aperture vs. Lightroom5

I'm almost certain this is probably a re-post, but then again, I couldn't find it when I searched the forum...

Thoughts/opinions on buying Apple Aperture ($79.99) vs. Adobe Lightroom 5 ($119.99 including $30 rebate until Jan 11, 2014)

I have, and enjoy Aperture, but then my PP is (so far) minimal. I use a Mac. I asked a similar question recently and was assured that I hadn't bought a turkey! It depends on what you want to be able to do, really.

I haven't touched photoshop or done any photo editing since highschool (11 years ago!), so my PP skills are gone! I'd like to simply sharpen up some images, maybe boost the color, lighting/shadows, convert color to BW. Nothing too complicated.

They will both work for you. I use both, which may sound funny but I prefer how Aperture catalogs photos and it allows me to display on other apple devices. Lightroom is a little more powerful and has more tweaking options, but I can't honestly say one is better than the other.

I wish Apple would some updates to get Aperture up to speed with LR, but no mention of it out of the Apple camp yet.

Now, I did get some plugin's that I use and they are both compatible with Aperture and LR, so if you want a little more than basic you can look up Nik tools and Perfect Photo Suite by onOne software.

If you are looking for similar power to photo shop then look for GIMP, its free although its not as user friendly as Adobe Photo Shop

I should add that I also have Snapseed (bought before Aperture and which I have set as Aperture's external photo editor) and the Nik suite, used as plug-ins within Aperture.

I went with LR5 just because of the "universal" nature of it. It seems that tutorials/support are far more readily available for LR than what's available for Aperture.

I am satisfied with my Aperture, but then I do a rather unsophisticated type of editing. Some cropping, some small tweaks and the occasional b&w conversion. If I did decide to do more difficult edits i would probably add lightroom. Just .do not see the need for it yet.

I'm not (and don't want to be) a heavy hitting photo editor, but I found iPhoto to be too lightweight, Photoshop and its satellite products too heavy, Aperture just about right. I appreciate that Aperture works with my iPhoto database so I didn't have to disrupt my current library of photos, and that I can import easily from both my iPhone and Nikon cameras. If I ever needed something more extensive, I have Gimp, however, I tend to not do a lot of real heavy modification of images, so Aperture is just about right.

As for that hysterical miss-mash of bad history and outright fantasy entitled The Patriot, ever notice how Benjamin Martin's kids were the same age before and after the 5 years of the Revolution?
