I know the original post is quite old now, but I'm pretty sure that Photoshop Elements on the Mac can work with NEF/RAW images. I had an older copy of Elements and I don't remember that as a limitation. I did a quick search of the Adobe site and it shows Camera Raw updates for the Mac version of Elements since 2005. The ability to export NEF/RAW files from Aperture is very easy. I sometimes like to use DxO and Photoshop for image enhancements and DxO needs the original RAW file to do its magic. What I do in these cases is to export the master image to a temporary directory where it can be picked up by DxO. The DxO processed image is then imported back into Aperture where I can do additional enhancements if warranted. When using Photoshop, the integration between it and Aperture is fine for my needs. I'm fine with using the TIFF files that Aperture sends to Photoshop, and like how the processed image from Photoshop is entered into the Aperture library as a duplicate but separate image. I've used both Lightroom (1 & 2) and Aperture (1.5 to 3.1) and find both tools integration to other image editors meet my needs. Certainly there is better integration between Lightroom and Photoshop, and DxO than what is available in Aperture today. But when it comes to working with a large number of images quickly, Aperture seems to work better for me.
